Sahiwal is an old district of Punjab, which has an agrarian economy and is famous for its educational institutions. Sensing the need for a medical college in the area, Sahiwal Medical College was established in 2010. The foundation stone of Sahiwal Medical College was laid in November 2010. The Punjab government has allotted 62 acres of land near Central Jail Sahiwal for the college, where the campus is in the final stages of furniture/completion at a cost of Rs. 1 billion. MBBS classes were started at DHQ Hospital Sahiwal Para Medical School but moved to the new campus in December 2014.
