The town of Gujarat is modern, but it occupies the site of an ancient city based on Raja Bachchan Pal, a Sun Bansi Rajput who migrated from the lower Ganges Doab. The ancient name of this city was Adnagri.
According to General Cunningham and Capt. H. Mackenzie, the construction of the existing walls of Gujarat on the ruins of Adnagri is attributed to Ali Khan, a Gujar, whose name is strangely similar to that of Alhana, the Raja of Gujar, who was defeated by Sangakkara. Between 883 and AD 901, during the reign of Mughal Emperor Akbar the Great, Gujarat was restored as a market and a military base. During British rule, Gujarat was made the district headquarters.
