The ancient name ‘Takshila’ means city of stones. Taxila has gained worldwide fame for its archeology. Taxila, a province of the Achaemenes Empire, was conquered by Alexander in 327 BC. It later came under the Morian dynasty and achieved a remarkable level of development during the reign of Ashoka the Great. Then came the Indo-Greek descendants of Alexander’s warriors, and finally came Gandhara’s most creative era. The Great Cushion Dynasty was founded around 50 AD. Over the next 200 years, Taxila became a popular center for learning, philosophy, art, and religion, Julian being a great center or university of the time. In the early 1970s, industrial development took on a new dimension when Taxila was selected for the Heavy Industries Taxila near the world-famous Museum. At the same time, Pakistan’s largest aeronautical complex was set up in Kamra, about 45 km from Taxila. In the mid-seventies, the Punjab government found the city ideally suited for the establishment of a constituency college at the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore. History took a new turn around 1950 when ordnance factories were set up in Wah, adjacent to Taxila. The country’s largest mechanical complex and foundry were established in Taxila in the mid-1960s.
