History:
In 1962, Major General (later Lieutenant General) Sahabzada Yakub Khan, Commandant Army Staff College, known for its military brilliance and intellectual prowess, was asked to plan a war course for running the Command and Staff College in Quetta. was asked for.

In 1971, the Army Warfare Course was rechristened as the ‘Armed Forces Warfare Course’ and the strength of the course was increased to 20, consisting of three officers each from the Navy and the Air Force. In 1975, on the instructions of the then Prime Minister Mr Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the college was affiliated with the Federal University of Islamabad (now Quaid-e-Azam University), conferring the degree of MSc (War Studies) to the participants. Due to the paucity of space for expansion of the college at Lalkurti, the then President, General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, decided to shift the college to Islamabad in February 1980. Accordingly, the college was shifted to the newly constructed building in Islamabad on 14 August 1995.
