The university, as of 2015, has grown into the largest university in Islamabad with a total enrollment of over 13,000 students. The university occupies a 1700-acre (or 6.9 km) campus in the foothills of Margalla. Divided into four faculties and nine affiliated research institutes, QAU is one of the largest and highest-ranked public universities in Pakistan. In 2020, it is ranked between 510–520 overall in the Physics, Mathematics and Agriculture departments, 225th, 225th and 125th worldwide, respectively, ranking it out of 100 in emerging economics. Ranked below which is probably a prestige, and ranked 111th in Asia by QS. The World University Rankings while its regional publications ranked QAU at 120 in Asia in 2013. The university has intellectual contacts with international institutions, including the United Nations, the University of Tokyo, and the ICTP. It is one of the most popular universities in the country and since its inception, it has had both current and former faculty, researchers, and former Many public figures and intellectuals are counted among the students. These include Maleeha Lodhi, Naseem Zehra, Shamshad Akhtar, Suhail Zubairy, Abdul Rashid Ghazi, Farzana Aslam, Tasneem Zehra and Salma Zahid. The university is currently headed by Professor Muhammad Ali.
